With the roots of this website in the rather tight cast of XHTML 1.1 (XHTML), it has recently been migrated to HTML5 (HTML) and already employs new elements brought forward by Cascading Style Sheets v3 (CSS). Furthermore, it implements a number of components suggested by the HTML5 Boilerplate (H5BP) and, finally, uses more than the previously intentionally minimalistic JavaScript. As such, the library JQuery is now embedded by default.
The heavy lifting in the background is performed by a PHP 5 script, which amongst other automatizations generates menus, headers and footers. It, moreover, provides simplified administration for an inhomogenously multi-lingual website. To achieve this it accesses a JSON database, as well as—for the sections on scientific publications—data held in Extensible Markup Language (XML), which in turn is brought into various formats harnessing XSL Transformations (XSLT).
Another example of a website developed by this webmaster is Nanophotonics.org.uk, which, however, is no longer maintained by him.
