Specific Areas of Interest

Physics of Electromagnetism. Nanophotonics, optoelectronics and metamaterials. Planar symmetries—chirality and polarization, quasiperiodicity and extraordinary transmission, tailored boundary conditions and magnetic mirrors. Practical implementations and testing for optics and microwaves. Numerical approaches with Monte Carlo, Finite Element and FDTD methods.

Physics in Life Sciences. Biophotonics—optical sensing and manipulation. Seismocardiography—tissue acoustics. Biostatistics—description, modeling and analysis of biological data.

Physics in Society. Not only the generation, distribution and use of energy are topics that have reached public interest. The adaptation and creation of economies and corporations that spark innovation and bring together the right minds are responsibilities that lie with more than just economics and business studies.

Former Affiliations, Scholarships, and Achievements

Alexander Schwanecke received his physics doctorate (Ph.D.) from the world-renowned Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton (UK) with a thesis on "Novel Phenomena in Planar and Layered, Photonic and Microwave Metamaterials," under the supervision of Prof. Nikolay Zheludev. Through his work he participated in the EU-Network of Excellence and Virtual Institute Metamorphose.

He received his earlier degree after studying at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southampton (UK) and the Department of Physics, University of Hamburg (D), while holding a scholarship with the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).

His earliest academic endeavors were several, very successful entries in young scientist competitions (Jugend forscht / Schüler experimentieren). Before and while studying in Hamburg he had stints and continuing relations with the Department of Applied Sciences of the German Naval Medical Institute (Schifffahrtmedizinisches Institut der Marine), Federal German Navy.

Alexander Schwanecke is current member of a number of professional societies in the described fields.
